The Dynamic Duo
Two of the most instrumental people to acquiring the casts were Helen Brace Emerson and L. G. Fisher. Emerson was the driving desire behind the purchase of the casts, while Fisher came through with the financial support. Emerson was also instrumental in the developing Fine Arts Department.
Helen Brace Emerson was one of the inspirational force behind both the acquisition of the statues and, more broadly, the Art Department at Beloit College and a major proponent of the growing Art department. While her husband taught in the Classics department, Mrs. Emerson offered her support moreso to the Arts by donating money and items, as well as working towards the casts and an Art Hall.
G. Fisher was the economic force behind the purchase. At first he offered 5 lots where the casts could be housed. When Beloit couldn’t fund the purchase he took back the proposed home and sold the land, providing Beloit with just enough money to purchase the casts.
