This entry is an oral history of Beverly Bond, conducted by Fiona Cismesia on March 22, 2019. In this interview, Ms.Bond describes her childhood in Beloit as an active member of New Zion Baptist Church and attendee of Beloit Memorial high school. After graduation, she left Beloit to study at the University of Southern Illinois and later lived in Ohio for a majority of her life. Her childhood was mainly spent on Pleasant St in Beloit, as her family owned and lived in three homes on the block.
Ms. Bond is the granddaughter of Joseph Alexander Johnson, who is one of three brothers that migrated to Beloit in March of 1917 from Pheba, Mississippi. These three brothers, Andrew James Johnson Jr, Joseph Alexander Johnson, and Wade Hampton Johnson, worked at Fairbanks Morse, and then, in the 1920s, opened and ran the Johnson Grocery Store. The Johnson family are well known in Beloit for their active involvement in the Black community.
