Emmanuel Baptist Church Diamond Jubilee 75th Anniversary Booklet
Subject
Emmanuel Baptist Church
Description
This is Carolyn Lawrence’s own booklet, herself being an active member of Beloit’s Emmanuel Baptist Church. It is from the church’s 75th anniversary, and is a comprehensive account of the church’s history, including a short biography of the pastor at that time, Floyd Prude. The church was organized on April 15, 1917, by a group of African Americans whose intention was, according to the booklet “to fill the spiritual needs of individuals and families” who were part of the Great Migration. Included in the introduction is the following:
"The story of the Emmanuel Baptist Church is also the story of African American life in the Midwest. It was the migration of African Americans from South to North and Wisconsin’s role in the nation’s expanding industrialization which spawned the birth and growth of the Emmanuel Church."
